Matt Andrews

Originally from Washington, DC, Matt is a jazz violinist now based in New Orleans, where he performs, records, and teaches. Trained in classical violin, he was drawn early to bebop and hard bop before discovering the rich legacy of jazz violin and immersing himself in Jazz Manouche, studying with leading artists from the U.S. and Europe. Over time, his focus has expanded to the roots of jazz and traditional New Orleans styles, drawing inspiration from violin greats like Stéphane Grappelli, Eddie South, and Stuff Smith, alongside icons such as Louis Armstrong and Jelly Roll Morton. Matt has recorded on numerous projects, including the 2022 debut album with his traditional jazz band, The Sheepshead Serenaders, and appearances on other New Orleans–based releases. He performs regularly around the city, most often with The Chris Christy Quintet, a Frenchmen Street staple blending traditional jazz with original compositions.
